Dassault is one of France’s foremost aviation manufacturers, with divisions specialising in military aircraft, electronics and business jets.
If you’re a regular private charter jet passenger, chances are good that you’ve been aboard the Dassault Falcon, the company’s flagship model.
For those who haven’t experienced the luxury and speed of the Dassault Falcon yet, let’s take a look at this unique business jet and the company that produces it.
90 years of aviation excellence
Dassault’s history is closely tied to the development of aviation technology in France, with the company celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2019.
Dassault started its journey on the path to success back in 1929. The company’s founder, Marcel Bloch, named the original business Société des Avions Marcel Bloch, or MB for short.
After World War 2, Bloch - who had survived a Nazi concentration camp - decided to change his last name to Dassault. The company’s name changed along with his, and from 1947 it was known as Avions Marcel Dassault.
Over the decades, Dassault went through several restructurings, M&A’s, and changes of focus. By the time the 1970’s and 80’s came along, Dassault had become one of the foremost French military and private charter jet manufacturers with a global presence.
Dassault passed away in 1986 at the impressive age of 94, leaving a lasting aviation legacy.
The best of military and civilian aviation
Dassault is a diversified aviation company with two main specialisations.
The company’s military aircraft lineup includes iconic 20th century aircraft like the Dassault Mirage, as well as more recent fighter jets including the Rafale.
Recently, the company has gone beyond aviation. Dassault’s Neuron military drone and several space-ready aircraft prototypes have made headlines in recent years.
One of Dassault’s great strengths is its ability to produce both military and commercial aircraft.
The Falcon, first launched in the 1960’s, has evolved over the years and incorporates the best of military and luxury jet features.
The Dassault Falcon - Speed, luxury and safety combined
The expertise required to produce reliable, battle-ready aircraft feeds into Dassault’s business jet division. With a stable design, quick ascent times, reliability, and long flight range, the Dassault Falcon brings together tough engineering and a high level of interior luxury.
These features come together to produce one of the best private jet offerings on the market.
The Falcon family includes six models, each with its own passenger capacity, flight range and maximum takeoff weight.
Shorter flights with 8 to 10 passengers are ideal for the Falcon 2000S and 2000LXS. These jets, which are the smallest in the range, have flight ranges of 3.515nm and 4,155nm respectively. They are ideal for flights in and around the EU or between the US East and West coast.
For longer flights with up to 14 or 16 passengers, the Falcon 900LX, 6X, or 7X offer longer flight ranges and larger takeoff weight. This is advantageous for long-haul charter flights because more passengers, luggage and other items and can be accommodated with ease.
The Falcon 8X, a powerful, long-haul private charter jet, is Dassault’s latest release. This model is capable of international flights of up to 6,450nm, or just under 12,000km.
With a range of Falcon jets offering a wide variety of features and options, Dassault’s private jet offering has been extremely successful.
As of 2017, the company had successfully delivered 2,500 Falcon jets since production commenced in the mid-1960s.
